Eight Softball Student-Athletes Named Academic All-GLIAC

Eight Wayne State University softball student-athletes were named to the 2009 GLIAC All-Academic team.

Seniors Laura Maiorana (Clinton Twp., Mich./Eisenhower), Lisa Seymour (Davison, Mich.), Sarah Teller (Chesterfield Twp., Mich./L'Anse Creuse North) and Lauren Warkentien (East China, Mich./Marine City) along with juniors Nicole Abel (Kitchener, Ont./St. Mary's), Jaci Banton (Richmond Hill, Ontario/Cardinal Carter), Casey Hanes (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman) and Stephanie LeClair (Kitchener, Ont./Forest Heights C.I.) earned a spot on the GLIAC All-Academic squad.

Seymour, Teller and Warkentien were three-time honorees, while Abel and LeClair were honored for the second time. Banton and Hanes (both transfers) were eligible for the first time in 2009.

To be eligible for GLIAC All-Academic status a student athlete must have: a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.0 or greater (on a 4.0 scale); must be a starter or key reserve; and must not be a freshman or first-year transfer.

Women's Swimming and Diving
Won three individual national titles at the NCAA Championships ... defended her titles in the 500 and 1000 freestyles, and also won the 1650 freestyle ... claimed six First Team All-America honors ... helped the Warriors achieve a second-place finish overall.
Joaquin Abascal Gallegos
Men's Swimming and Diving
Won two individual national titles at the NCAA Championships ... took first place in the 400 individual medley as well as the 200 breaststroke ... was Wayne State's co-leader with seven First Team All-America awards ... helped WSU finish in third place overall.
