Preliminary Results
CANTON, Ohio - The Wayne State men’s swimming and diving team has five swimmers qualified to compete in the finals on the last night of competition at the NCAA Championships.
Cauli Bedran (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) qualified for Saturday night’s “A” final in the 100 free with a third-place preliminary time of 44.52, eclipsing current WSU student assistant coach Sebastian Rzepa’s 2009 record of 44.68.
Justin Shields (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay) finished 29th (46.37).
Nathan Hesche (Jackson, Mich.) made the “B” final in the 200 backstroke, placing 11th (1:50.20).
Jimmy Lee (Windsor, Ont./Riverside) came in 24th (1:53.60).
Two Warriors finished among the top-16 in the preliminary 200 breaststroke.
Joaquin Abascal Gallegos (Madrid, Spain) qualified second (2:02.31) and
Matthew Laschuk (Tecumseh, Ont./Academie Ste. Cecile) came in 12th (2:04.44).
Matt Victor (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay) placed 21st (2:08.65).
The 400 free relay team of Bedran, Hesche,
Oskar Nordstrand (Stockholm, Sweden), and Shields qualified seventh (3:02.60).
Nordstrand posted a time of 16:09.63 in the afternoon heats of the 1650 free. His place will be determined as the top eight seeds compete Saturday night.
The final evening of the NCAA Championships, which will include men’s three-meter diving, will begin at 6:00 p.m. Wayne State is in third place with 250 points, holding a one-point advantage over conference rival Grand Valley State.
