Connect With Wayne State University
"Making great connections" is the best way to describe what's going on at Wayne State University these days. This comprehensive, national, research university continues to strengthen its programs, facilities and resources. WSU is committed to providing an affordable, high-quality, career-oriented learning environment, where liberal and professional studies are integrated.
In addition to some 100 research and education buildings on nearly 200 acres, WSU's neighbors include the area's major cultural, theatrical, industrial, and sports and entertainment venues. Being located in the heart of Detroit gives students access to some of the largest companies and manufacturers in the world. Many WSU students secure internships with major corporations while they continue their studies. And because of WSU's stellar reputation, more than 95 percent of its students find jobs within six months of graduation.
Wayne State University offers an education that is global in its outlook. Students build on their education with teaching opportunities enhanced by the latest new technologies, by performing with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and by designing cars for the Big Three automotive manufacturers. WSU gives students the unique opportunity to connect with faculty members who are national experts in their fields. Students participate directly in research that is shaping the future. Wayne State faculty members have made their marks in virtually every field and discipline. They receive funding from such organizations as the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Education as well as from Detroit hospitals and the state of Michigan.
WSU continues to build on its foundation to bring a quality education to a new generation of students.
The university has come a long way since its start as the Detroit Medical College in 1868. The College of Education came next (1881) followed by the College of Liberal Arts (1917), the College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions (1924), the Law School (1927), the Graduate School (1933), the College of Engineering (1933), the School ofSocial Work (1935), the College of Nursing (1945), the School of Business Administration (1946), the College of Lifelong Learning (1973), the College of Urban, Labor and Metropolitan Affairs (1985) and the College of Fine, Performing & Communication Arts (1986). The addition of the College of Science in 1993 brings the total number of schools and colleges to 14.
Today, nearly 31,000 students attend WSU. Among its biggest attractions are its large course and program offerings. The university offers more than 5,500 courses in 359 major subject areas with 128 bachelor's, 137 master's, 62 doctoral, and 32 certificate, specialist and professional programs. It is no wonder WSU has one of the largest graduate enrollments in the country. Besides the quality of its programs, another draw to Wayne State is its six satellite centers throughout the metropolitan area. Two of the largest sites are the Oakland Center in Farmington Hills and the University Center at Macomb Community College.
WSU is focused on meeting the needs of the 21st century, providing an education that nurtures professional development while integrating work-based learning and communication and applied technologies to prepare students for a technically advanced workplace.
