DETROIT, Mich - The Warrior women's tennis squad notched a critical home stretch win Friday, defeating the visiting Ferris State Bulldogs (3-3 GLIAC, 3-3 overall) 9-0. With the win, WSU moves into fourth place in the GLIAC standings (4-3, 6-3 overall).
Everyone was a winner as WSU recorded it's second shutout this season. At No. 1 singles Sharon Gill (Windsor, Ontario/Academie Ste. Cecile) lost her first set to Amy Ingle, 6-4. Then Gill got into a rhythm, winning the next two sets 6-1 and 10-8 in a super tiebreaker, improving her singles record to 7-2.
Deby Correa (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Padre Eustaquio) was tested by Natalie Diorio in No. 4 singles. Correa won a first set tiebreaker 7-6 (11-9), and wrapped up the win with a 6-2 second set victory.
Jennifer Bradford (Detroit, Mumford) and Kristina Goranskaya (Thornhill, Ontario/Northview Heights Secondary School) are both on five match winning streaks. Bradford has a record of 8-1 in singles action.
WSU swept doubles play by scores of 8-4, 8-3 and 9-7 respectively.
Saturday, the Warriors will host Grand Valley State at 10 a.m. The match will be at the Matthaei tennis facility.
