Wayne State University senior Rachelle Malette (Windsor, Ont./Holy Names) has been selected GLIAC Cross Country Runner of the Week following her outstanding performance at the 2008 Slippery Rock University Pre-National Cross Country meet last Saturday.
Malette crossed the finish line first out of 287 competitors and aided WSU in earning a third-place finish. Malette's time of 21:35 in the 6,000-meter race was 33 seconds faster than runner-up Vivien Wadeck from Cal State, and 25 seconds better than her second-place 6k performance last week at the Iona Meet of Champions. She has finished either first or second in each of her four races this season.
A senior majoring in pharmacy, Malette has finished in the top 10 in 22 collegiate races and was also a 2007 GLIAC Commissioner's Award recipient last fall.
Malette, the defending GLIAC Champion, has been selected six times as GLIAC Cross Country Runner of the Week during her collegiate career.
