COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Wayne State University men's fencing program concluded competition at the Midwest Fencing Conference Championships on Sunday and finished fourth out 21 scoring teams. The Warriors tallied 635 points and were paced by three All-MFC performers as redshirt
Ziad Elsissy (Alexandra, Egypt), sophomore
Henry Kisthardt (Edmund, Okla. / North) and sophomore
Brendan Johnson (Troy, Mich. / Birmingham Seaholm) earned the honors. Elsissy was named First Team All-MFC, while Johnson was a Second Team honoree and Kisthardt collected Honorable Mention recognition.
Overall, the men and women finished fifth with 1,270 points.
SABER RESULTS
- Overall, WSU went 19-12 in the saber and finished in third place in the team saber competition after winning the third-place match over Detroit Mercy 5-3. The Warriors began the day beating Michigan State 5-2, and followed with a 5-2 victory over Lawrence before dropping a tightly-contested bout against Michigan, 5-4.
- Elsissy went unbeaten in his 12 bouts, while freshman
David DeClark (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Seaholm) went 6-4 and freshman
Pranav Gopalakrishnan (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Brother Rice) posted a 1-8 record.
EPEE RESULTS
- WSU bested Michigan State 5-3 before falling to Michigan, 5-2. WSU rebounded with a win over Wisconsin and won the fifth-place contest over Northwestern, 5-3.
- Kisthardt went 8-4 in his bouts, while junior
Brenton Villeneuve (Clarkston, Mich.) finished 6-4 in his 10 bouts. Redshirt sophomore
Nader Rayyan (Dearborn Heights, Mich. / Crestwood) went winless in his eight matches.
