Post-Game Interview with Jim Fetter
DETROIT - In the first game of the 2010-11 regular season, the Wayne State University women's hockey team came out on the losing end of a
3-0 result against Bemidji State University on Friday night at the City Sports Center.
The Warriors, who gave up a pair of goals in the first period, were unable to solve BSU junior netminder Zuzana Tomcikova, who totaled 27 saves for her ninth career shutout.
Sadie Lundquist, Emily Erickson and Erin Cody finished with a goal and an assist each as Wayne State fell to 0-2-1 in its last three home openers.
With just one second left in a BSU power play, Lundquist beat
Delayne Brian (Winnipeg, Man./Notre Dame Hounds) from the right wing with a quick wrist shot at 12:50 of the first period. Erickson's tally came less than four minutes later and put the Beavers ahead by a pair.
After being out-shot 15-6 in the opening period, the Warriors started to turn the tide with a 21-18 advantage over the next two frames. Tomcikova held the Warriors off the board, however, including an 0-for-6 mark on power plays.
Cody's goal from Erickson and Lundquist midway through the third sealed the win for Bemidji State.
Julie Ingratta (Markham, Ont./North American Hockey Academy) led WSU with seven shots on goal, including five in the second period.
Brian finished with 30 saves and limited the Beavers to just their one power-play goal in seven chances.
Wayne State and Bemidji State will wrap up the two-game weekend series tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
