Men's Swimming Starts Strong At NCAAs Wednesday

Bedran sets 50 free school record

CANTON, Ohio -
The Wayne State University men's swimming and diving team began competition at the 2010 NCAA Division II Championships with Wednesday morning's preliminary events at C.T. Branin Natatorium.

Cauli Bedran (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Joaquin Abascal Gallegos (Madrid, Spain) will each swim in the finals of two events on Wednesday night.

Bedran finished fourth in the preliminary 50 freestyle (20.22), edging the school record of 20.23 set by Jesper Akesson last season.

Abascal Gallegos, who finished fourth in the 200 individual medley (1:50.52), joined Bedran, Nathan Hesche (Jackson, Mich.) and Justin Shields (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay) on the fifth-place 200 medley relay (1:31.43).

Jimmy Lee (Windsor, Ont./Riverside) also competed in the prelims of the 200 IM, finishing 30th (1:54.58).

Oskar Nordstrand (Stockholm, Sweden) will swim in tonight's final heat of the 1000 free as Wednesday's competition continues starting at 6:00 p.m. Fans can follow the action with live results and video all week long courtesy of ncaa.com.
