Wednesday Results
CANTON, Ohio - After the first night of the 2010 NCAA Championships, the Wayne State women’s swimming and diving team claimed three national titles and trails defending champion Drury University by just 13 points as the schools occupy the top two positions (156-143).
The Panthers and Warriors are well ahead of the rest of the pack, as Clarion is in third place with 72 points.
Wayne State, which won three events at last year's national meet, matched that total in one night Wednesday at C.T. Branin Natatorium.
Earning individual championships were seniors
Ashley St. Andrew (Grand Rapids, Mich./Jenison), who successfully defended her title in the 1000 freestyle, and
Cassie Chetosky (Shelby Twp., Mich./Utica), the winner of the three-meter diving competition, becoming the first female diver in WSU history to win a national title.
In addition, the 200 medley relay combination of
Sara Franklin (Caro, Mich.),
Courtney Roberts (Milan, Mich.),
Ana Gonzalez Pena (Gijon, Spain) and
Ashley Corriveau (Metamora, Mich./Lapeer East) finished in first place, setting an NCAA meet record and edging Drury by .31 seconds.
St. Andrew posted a time of 9:57.48 to finish over eight seconds ahead of the rest of the field and earn the third NCAA championship of her career.
Stephanie Ekleberry’s (Rochester Hills, Mich./Avondale) morning swim (10:21.01) put her in eighth place.
Chetosky broke her own 11-dive school record with a score of 503.30 on the three-meter board.
Carly Sevald (Royal Oak, Mich./Mercy) and
Lena Wileczek (Holland, Mich./West Ottawa) finished third (454.05) and eighth (397.05), respectively, and
Meghan Jaworski’s (Dundee, Mich.) preliminary score of 333.20 put her in 13th place. The Warriors accumulated 51 points in the three-meter diving event.
Both Wayne State (1:41.46) and Drury (1:41.77) came in under the meet record pace set by the Panthers last year (1:42.30). The Warriors also broke the school record, set last month at the GLIAC Championships, by over a second.
Others performing well individually were
Elaina Hogle (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood), who came in fifth in the “A” final of the 200 individual medley (2:04.19), and Franklin who placed 10th in the 50 free (23.71).
Thursday’s competition will begin with the preliminary round at 10:30 a.m. Fans can follow the action with live
