CoSIDA PRESS RELEASE

DETROIT -
Four Wayne State University student-athletes received CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV College Division At-Large accolades last week, as voted upon by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Among those selected to the First Team were swimmers Ashley St. Andrew (Grand Rapids, Mich./Jenison) and Matthew Laschuk (Tecumseh, Ont./Academie Ste. Cecile), as well as tennis student-athlete Roberto Gomez (Comitan Chiapas, Mexico).  Swimmer Cauli Bedran (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) was named to the Second Team for the second consecutive year.

St. Andrew, an All-District Second Team selection in 2009, has maintained a 3.50 grade-point average in the College of Pharmacy and is a two-time GLIAC Winter Commissioner's Award winner for academic and athletic excellence.  The senior and 25-time All-American received the Dean's Award in 2009 for having the highest cumulative GPA among all student-athletes in the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.  She was also voted the 2009 WSU/EDS Female Student-Athlete of the Year.

Laschuk is a sophomore with a 3.99 GPA in chemistry.  He received the NCAA Elite 88 Award at nationals in March, a new award presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative GPA participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA’s 88 championships.  Laschuk has been named to the WSU Athletic Director's Honor Roll (term gpa 3.5+) every semester.

The 2010 Dean's Award winner for the College of Engineering, Gomez has maintained a 3.98 grade-point average in industrial engineering.  He posted perfect 4.00 GPAs in each of his first three semesters at Wayne State.  On the court, the senior has won 10 singles matches each of the last two years.

Bedran, a senior with a 3.66 GPA in political science, has been a recipient of the GLIAC Winter Commissioner's Award each of the last two seasons.  He has been on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll five times and the Coach's Honor Roll (term gpa 3.0-3.49) twice.  The 24-time All-American and three-time GLIAC All-Academic Team honoree also serves on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

The three First Team selections will be placed on the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration.

The District IV Academic team was selected by members of CoSIDA located in Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee and Alabama.
