Women's Basketball Falls In Exhibition Play at Toledo, 73-47

Boxscore

Toledo, Ohio -- In the middle contest of a three-game exhibition slate against Mid-American Conference schools, the Wayne State University women's basketball team dropped a 73-47 decision at the University of Toledo Sunday afternoon.

The game started promising for the Warriors as a Paige Sickmiller (Romeo, Mich.) steal led to a jumper by Amelia Davis (Temperance, Mich. / Bedford) on a fast break which put WSU ahead 2-1.  Senior center Juanita Cochran (Saginaw, Mich. / Arthur Hill) answered a Rocket lay-up with one of her own, and less than a minute later Cochran split a pair from the charity stripe increasing the lead to 5-3.

Cochran scored again down low at the 15:02 mark to knot the game at seven off a feed from senior Talisha Bridges (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Loy Norrix).  After four straight UT points, senior forward Phaebre Colbert (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Forest Hills Northern) scored from inside to make it a two-point game at 11-9.

Redshirt freshman Stephanie Lock (White Lake, Mich. / Lakeland) converted a pass from freshman guard Kristen Long (Corunna, Mich. / Durand) to end a 5-0 Toledo run.  However, Lock's basket would be WSU's last field goal for over eight minutes until sophomore Kayla Bridges (Canton, Mich.) scored in the final 30 seconds of the first half.  The Rockets had a 17-4 spurt during the Warrior scoring drought.

Toledo held an 17-2 advantage in points off turnovers during the first half as Wayne State had 18 miscues, while the Rockets converted 17 offensive rebounds into only nine second chance points.

WSU pulled within 13 about four minutes into the second half on a triple by senior forward Deanna Crumpton (Kentwood, Mich. / East Kentwood) which made it 41-28, but UT responded with a 10-0 run until Sickmiller drained her second of two second half three's.

Sickmiller led WSU with 10 points, three assists and two steals, while Colbert and Long tied for team-high rebound totals with five apiece.

Naama Shafir and Janelle Reed-Lewis each had 19 points for the Rockets, who out-rebounded the Warriors 52-41 in the contest.

Wayne State will close out its exhibition schedule with a 7 p.m. tip-off on Tuesday at Eastern Michigan.
