Evanston, Ill. -- The Wayne State University women's fencing team had a 3-5 record Saturday at the Northwestern Duals, which included five matches against top-15 teams.
The Warriors began the NU Duals with a 15-12 victory over UC-San Diego. WSU then lost 20-7 vs. No. 8-Temple, 19-8 against 10th-ranked Duke and ended the morning session with a 16-11 triumph over Stevens Tech.
Wayne State began the afternoon session with a 21-6 setback aginst No. 2-Princeton. After a 15-12 loss to No. 15-North Carolina, the Warriors upended Stanford 15-12. In the final match, WSU fell to sixth-ranked Ohio State 22-5.
The foilist led the way at Northwestern compiling a 47-25 record. Junior
Olivia Dobbs (Detroit, Mich. / Farmington High School) was outstanding recording a 20-4 mark. Junior
Tiaja Sabrie (Midland, Mich. / H.H. Dow) went 16-8, while freshman
Marie Deschuytter (Kuringen, Belgium) had an 11-13 record.
A trio of sabre competitors combined for a 25-47 record. Sophomore
Kaja Klodawska (Lodz, Poland) led the way with a 15-9 mark. Senior
Katie Bryce (Rochester, Mich. / Rochester Adams) had a 6-18 record, while junior
Shante Wilkerson (Detroit, Mich. / Communication & Media Arts) went 4-20.
Four Warrior fencers participated in the epee competition. Leading the way with a 4-17 record was senior
Charlotte Reed (Wyandotte, Mich. / Riverview Gabriel Richard). Sophomore
Rachel Davis (Oak Park, Mich. / Berkley) went 4-19, while junior
Brianne Hefner (Rochester, Mich. / Stoney Creek) had a 1-21 record. Freshman
Cydney McChesney lost all three of her bouts.
The Warriors (15-11 overall) will be off from competition until the U.S. Collegiate Fencing Championship at New York University on Feb. 26.
