DETROIT -- Behind junior
Paige Kortman's record-breaking day on the diving platform, the Wayne State University women's swimming and diving squad defeated the University of Findlay on Friday at the Matthaei, 134-89.
Kortman (Holland, Mich. / Holland) broke WSU varsity records in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving platforms for six dives in each event. Kortman finished with a score of 319.27 in the 1-meter diving event and 342.45 in the 3-meter diving competition.
Kortman's 342.45 point total in the 3-meter women's diving event broke a 28-year-old WSU varsity record. Susan Gierschick held the old record of 331.30, which she recorded in 1984.
Senior diver
Carly Sevald (Royal Oak, Mich. / Mercy) finished second in both diving events with season-high scores of 300.07 and 316.35 in the 1-meter and 3-meter events, respectively. Senior
Emily Mitzelfeld (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) also posted season-best totals of 311.25 points in the 3-meter event and 291.30 in the 1-meter competition.
Sophomore
Rachael LaCroix (Taylor, Mich. / Allen Park Cabrini) and freshman
Alex Geddis-McCririe (Brighton, Mich. / Brighton) each posted NCAA qualifying scores in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events. Geddis McCririe scored 284.92 points in the 3-meter event and 261.82 in the 1-meter competition, while LaCroix tallied 276.82 points (1-meter) and 269.85 points (3-meter).
Freshman
Kristina Novichenko (Seversk, Russia / Saint-Petersburg), junior
Carol Azambuja (Sao Paulo, Brazil / Colegio Objetivo) and senior
Sarah Maraskine (Midland, Mich. / Dow) each won two events for the Warriors.
Novichenko won the 1000 freestyle in a time of 10:30.02 and also won the 100 butterfly in a time of 58.56. Maraskine won both the 100 freestyle (54.86) and 200 freestyle (1:56.90). Azambuja won the 200 IM in a time of 2:10.19 and touched the wall first in the 100 backstroke in a time of 58.52.
Senior
Ashley Corriveau (Metamora, Mich. / Lapeer East) earned a victory in the 50 freestyle, finishing with a time of 24.36. Junior
Kayla Scott (Rochester, Mich. / Adams) also touched the wall first in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.16).
Wayne State also won both relays. The team of Maraskine, Scott, Azambuja and Corriveau swam a time of 1:47.11 to win the 200 medley relay. The Warrior quartet of sophomore
Kei Cze Prentis (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica Eisenhower),
Elly Maleski (Cedar, Mich. / Traverse City West),
Alex Malfroid (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Eisenhower) and Corriveau earned a victory by swimming a time of 1:39.82 in the 200 freestyle relay.
The Warriors don't rest for long, traveling on Saturday to Grand Valley to face the Lakers.
