GLIAC Announces Spring 2013 Commissioner's Award Winners

WSU had six Commissioner's Award winners this past athletic season.

BAY CITY, Mich. -- Wayne State University senior baseball student-athlete Ethan Vasiliauskas (South Rockwood, Mich. / Carleton Airport) and senior tennis student-athlete Thomas Ducret (Paris, France) have received the GLIAC Spring 2013 Commissioner's Award. The awards, sponsored by Meijer, are presented after the Fall, Winter and Spring athletic seasons to six female student-athletes and six male student-athletes that excel both in the classroom and in athletic competition.

"It is with great pleasure that I offer congratulations on behalf of the GLIAC to our 12 award winners," stated GLIAC Commissioner Dell Robinson. "The accomplishments of the 12 student-athletes is a shining example of the future leaders and individuals who serve as change agents on our campuses. I would like thank Meijer for their continued support that allows the GLIAC to honor our top student-athletes."

Vasiliauskas was a team co-captain, named to the All-GLIAC Second Team and the GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team. He appeared in 14 games, made 11 starts and went 7-3 with a 4.28 ERA while striking out 44 over 69.1 innings pitches. He led the team in innings and tossed two complete games. He went a career-high eight innings in each of his first two starts in 2013 and struck out a career-high seven batters on April 27 against SVSU on his way to a complete game victory, his seventh win of the year.

In 2012, he was an All-GLIAC Honorable Mention selection. He pitched in 20 games, which is tied for third-most in program history. He made 18 relief appearances, which is the sixth-most in history and he tied for second on the staff with six victories. He has been named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll (Term GPA 3.5+) for Fall 2011 (4.00), Winter 2012 (4.00), Fall 2012 and Winter 2013 (all four semesters at WSU since transferring from Jackson Community College).  Vasiliauskas finished his Warrior career with a 13-5 record in 34 appearances with two complete games and a 3.79 ERA and 78 strikeouts in 116.1 innings.

Ducret was also a Spring 2012 GLIAC Commissioner's Award recipient.  He collected All-GLIAC Second Team honors this past season and was named to the GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team. He posted a 15-7 singles record, including a 9-3 mark at No. 3 singles and 4-3 record at No. 2 singles. He had an 8-2 singles record in GLIAC play and finished 12-3 at No. 3 doubles. For his career, he ranks third in program history with 58 singles wins and tied for third with 52 doubles triumphs. He was a 2011-12 recipient of the DII ADA Academic Achievement Award.

Ducret was a four-time All-GLIAC selection (First Team in 2011 and 2012, Second Team in 2010 and 2013) and a three-time GLIAC All-Academic selection (Excellence in 2012 and 2013, Academic in 2011). In 2011-12 earned the ITA Scholar-Athlete Award. He was named GLIAC Athlete of the Week on February 18, 2012 and March 24, 2011. In addition, he was named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll (Term GPA 3.5+) for Fall 2010, Winter 2011, Fall 2011, Winter 2012, Fall 2012 and Winter 2013 and was named to the Coach's Honor Roll (Term GPA 3.0-3.49) for Fall 2009 and Winter 2010.

Earlier in the athletic season, Wayne State senior football student-athletes Mickey Mohner (Painesville, Ohio/Harvey) and Nick Thomas (Akron, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary) were recipients of the Fall 2012 Meijer Commissioner's Award and senior swimmer Nathan Hesche (Jackson, Mich. / Jackson) and junior swimmer Kayla Scott (Rochester, Mich. / Adams) received the GLIAC Winter 2013 Commissioner's Award.

Since the GLIAC instituted the Commissioner's Award for the 2007-08 academic year, 24 WSU student-athletes have earned this award a total of 31 times.  The seven two-time recipients are Alison Allen, Cauli Bedran, Thomas Ducret, Catherine Leix, Josh Renel, Ashley St. Andrew and Mike Wiseman.
