DETROIT -- The annual Wayne State University Summer Baseball Camp is in the books after nearly 200 participants and their families experience the WSU campus and Detroit.

Campers with ages ranging from 7-18 worked out with retired Detroit Tigers' pitching coach and current advisor with the organization Jeff Jones, area coaches, former professional players and WSU baseball student-athletes. The campers learned many new drills and exercises intended to hone their baseball skills as they move forward and advance in the sport. In addition, they were entertained and educated by Tigers' Shane Greene, Alex Avila, and Michael Fulmer, who held a Q&A and autograph session with the campers.

Most recently, Jones served on the staff that lead Team USA to a World Baseball Class Title in 2017

A new feature to this year's curriculum followed all three camp days.  Following the drills on Monday, campers and parents were treated to a campus tour to see what a day in the life of an NCAA college student-athlete.  The second day featured a Comerica Park tour.  After day three, participants and their families were able to watch the Detroit Tigers face the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday night.

The third and final day was a pitching and catching focused clinic with the help of Jones and his professional instruction.

"This was an exciting experience since we've added new concepts to our annual summer camp programming," said head coach Ryan Kelley.  "It was great to offer an opportunity to allow our camp community to witness how dynamic and vast our Midtown Detroit central campus is. On day one we provided a campus tour with an inside look at the lifestyle of a NCAA baseball student-athlete with points of emphasis directed at academic success, residential life, strength & conditioning and nutrition. On day two we featured this region's excitement between Midtown and District Detroit.  Trinity Transportation assisted us with a round trip bus ride down Woodward Avenue.  Participants and their families were able to experience a great tour of Comerica Park, but also get a glimpse of Wayne State University's new Mike Ilitch School of Business & Little Caesars Arena construction.  On day three camp participants and their families were able to attend the Detroit Tigers vs. Kansas City Royals game. Beyond off the field experiences we provided an exceptional collection of camp staff detailed with current and former NCAA baseball student-athletes, former professional baseball players, and select high school & college coaches. Thank you very much to our event staff who provided detailed and organized instruction in the areas of infield, outfield, catching, pitching, base running, and related baseball training methods.  This summer camp experience has consistently been highlighted by the teamwork and leadership of Jeff Jones.  His passion to give back to the game by providing rewarding opportunities for the next generation of baseball is outstanding!"
